Definition

Digital rectal examination is the first step in the search for the detection of prostate cancer. It consists in the examination of the prostate by palpating with the finger through the rectum wall.

Prostate Cancer

This test allows the doctor to detect an increase in prostate volume, a change in the consistency of the prostate such as a curing and verifies presence of irregularities on its surface. Digital rectal examination can detect prostate tumors that can be felt.

PSA

This examination can sometimes detect a cancer even when the value of the PSA blood test is considered normal. This specific prostatic antigen helps for a diagnosis and to monitor the development of prostate cancer. 

Indications

Digital rectal examination is primarily recommended for men aged 50 years and more. They are advised to have it performed once a year, by their doctor, a rectal examination will permit to detect the disease at the earliest stage. Digital rectal examination is recommended for men who have in their family a person with prostate cancer and those who present with symptoms which may indicate prostate cancer.
